"He and I have been on exactly the same page. I saw a headline, 'I'm defying Trump.' I'm not. I'm not defying President Trump," the speaker said. "He understands fully. President Trump understands the current dilemma and the situation that we're in, and so there's no daylight between us." The speaker tried and failed to pass a six-month continuing resolution (CR) last week that included the SAVE Act, which would require proof of citizenship to register to vote. Mr. Trump had previously urged Republicans to let the government shut down if they couldn't get the measure through. Instead, Speaker Johnson had to pivot to a three-month CR that doesn't include the SAVE Act, and will have to rely on Democratic votes to prevent a lapse in federal funding.
