Thom Tillis (R-NC) criticized the Justice Department’s investigation into Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell on Thursday and took aim at those who have called his opposition to the probe inappropriate.   “I was actually a witness at the alleged scene of the crime,” he said during a Senate Banking Committee hearing with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent.   The Justice Department has opened an investigation into Mr. Powell over possible perjury related to his testimony before the committee about the cost and scope of renovations at the Federal Reserve’s headquarters.   “The entire case against [Mr. Powell] is encapsulated in his answers to questions before this committee,” Sen. Tillis said. “We’ve all said that he was testifying, and we didn’t see a crime.”   The North Carolina Republican has said he will oppose all Federal Reserve nominees — including President Trump’s chair nominee, Kevin Warsh — until the investigation is closed.   With the Senate Banking Committee split 13–11 between Republicans and Democrats, Sen.
